As of January 1st, 2007, U.S. Immigrations requires that all U.S. citizens traveling to Mexico have a valid U.S. Passport. Given this new law, the demand on the Passport Offices has been enourmous. Suggestions:
You may obtain passport applications at your local postoffice or on-line. The requirements for the application will be listed: proof of U.S. citizenship (birth certificate) and 2 passport size color photos. Yoiu may expedite your passport - instructions are on the application. For renewals, a marriage certicate or a court order if your name has changed. Going this application route, we have heard takes several weeks.
You may also obtain your passport by appearing in person at one of the national passposrt offices. The passport office in Houston is in the Federal Building at 1919 Smith Street. You must make an appointment by calling the National Passport Information Center (1-877-487-2778) and following the vpiced prompts. Pay careful attention to what you will need to bring with you to the appointment (i.e. birth certificate, photos, proof of travel -- i.e. copy of email ticket confirmation or copy of ticket). If you go this route, and pay the extra charges, we have heard, you will receive your passport within a week.
FOR THE MOST UP-TO-DATE AND CORRECT INFORMATION, PLEASE CHECK THE PASSPORT WEBSITE OR WITH YOUR LOCAL POSTOFFICE.
